Preparation (please quickly check before you start)
-
You need Wi-Fi
The installation works most reliably with a stable Wi-Fi connection (at home is ideal). -
Open the QR code on a second device
Best option: open the activation email on a laptop, tablet, or a second phone.
(If the QR code is on the same iPhone you want to install the eSIM on, scanning can often be inconvenient.) -
Your iPhone must support eSIM and must not be SIM-locked
(If your iPhone is locked, it cannot add third-party eSIMs.)
Part 1: Install the eSIM (you can already do this before your trip)
- Open Settings
Settings → Cellular - Add eSIM
Tap: Add eSIM (depending on the iOS version it may also say: Add Cellular Plan) - Scan the QR code
Tap: Use QR Code Then scan the QR code from your eSIMony email.
If scanning does not work:
- Tap: Enter Details Manually and enter the activation data from your email.
- Add Cellular Plan: Your iPhone will show that a new cellular plan has been detected. Tap Continue / Add and follow the instructions on the screen.
- Name the plan (very important so you can find it again): Give the plan a clear name, for example: eSIMony USA or eSIMony South America
- Select default line for calls & SMS Here make sure to select: Primary This ensures calls and SMS continue through your regular number.
- Set iMessage & FaceTime Here also choose: Primary So iMessage and FaceTime continue to work with your usual number.
- Set mobile data Under Mobile Data select: eSIMony And very important: Toggle “Allow Mobile Data Switching” = OFF (This prevents the iPhone from accidentally using data from your home SIM.)
- Finish setup Tap Done. Safety check after installation (so nothing starts running before your trip)
- Leave eSIMony data roaming OFF for now Settings → Cellular → eSIMony → Data Roaming Data Roaming = OFF (until you are in your destination country)
- Optional (extra safe): temporarily disable the eSIMony line Settings → Cellular → eSIMony → Turn On This Line = OFF (This guarantees that nothing can run in the background. You will turn it on again in your destination country.)
Part 2: Activation in the destination country (do this only after arrival)
As soon as you land (or shortly before landing):
- Turn on the eSIMony line (if previously disabled) Settings → Cellular → eSIMony → Turn On This Line = ON
- Enable data roaming for eSIMony Settings → Cellular → eSIMony → Data Roaming = ON
- Set mobile data to eSIMony (if it changed) Settings → Cellular → Mobile Data → eSIMony
- Home SIM: keep data roaming OFF This prevents any roaming charges from your regular carrier.
