Data usage calculator

How much data do I need for my trip abroad? It is one of the most common questions before travelling, and the answer is simpler than you might think. It all comes down to how you use your phone on the go. Someone who mainly uses maps and sends a few messages needs far less data than someone who streams videos every evening or makes daily video calls. Use our free data usage calculator to find out in seconds which eSIM plan is the right fit for your trip.

Where do you need data?

How we calculate your data usage

Our estimates are based on real-world mobile data consumption values. Every activity uses a different amount of data, and usage can vary quite a bit depending on the app and quality settings. Social media browsing and short video consumption typically uses around 250 MB per hour. HD video streaming can reach between 1.5 and 2 GB per hour depending on the platform. Navigation apps use relatively little data at around 15 MB per hour, but the total adds up on longer trips. Video calls over Zoom or FaceTime use approximately 700 MB per hour depending on connection quality.

The calculator result includes a 20 percent buffer on top of your estimated usage, so you have some headroom for unexpected browsing or a longer day of navigation than planned.

What if I run out of data?

Not a problem. Most of our eSIM plans support top-ups, which you can add directly from your device in just a few minutes without needing a new SIM card or any reconfiguration. For longer stays, we generally recommend erring on the side of a larger package since the peace of mind is usually worth the small extra cost.

Which plan is right for me?

As a rough guide: travellers on a one-week trip who mainly navigate, browse social media and send messages will typically be well covered by 3 to 5 GB. If you plan to stream daily or make regular video calls, we recommend starting from 10 GB per week. Remote workers who rely on a stable connection for work are best served by an unlimited plan or a large data package.
